Large businesses are increasingly turning to solar to take advantage of lower power costs locked in for a long term. One such example is Raviraj Corn Products installing a 2.63 MW solar project at its facility in Solapur, Maharashtra.
The solar project, comprising 1.3 MW of ground-mounted capacity and two rooftop systems totaling 700 kW and 630 kW, is expected to save the company ₹28 million (~$302,700) in electricity expenses annually.
Corn starch manufacturing is a continuous-process industry that requires large amounts of power. The company had a monthly power expenditure of more than ₹7.5 million (~$81,081) and an estimated annual expenditure of over ₹90 million (~$972,603) before installing the solar project.
Power generated from the project is expected to meet more than 35% of its needs.
Pratik Pawar, Director at Raviraj Corn Products, said the company decided to go with a ground-mounted project after seeing the benefits of solar from the 210-kW project at its Pune facility.
In Pune, the company generated low-cost power, and this success became the driving force behind the installation in Solapur. “We have a lot of unused land, and we decided to utilize it to set up the solar project.”
Raviraj Corn is currently meeting 40% of its power needs through renewables across all its facilities.
Pawar also highlighted that the company found solar to be a means of generating power with the least complexity and the lowest operational costs.
The project was set up in March 2026 by Polaris Renewable Solutions at a cost of over ₹74 million (~$800,000).
The solar system was set up with Rayzon Solar’s 550 Wp monocrystalline modules coupled with Growatt’s inverters ranging from 50 kW to 150 kW.
The installation is expected to generate more than 10,000 units of electricity daily and 295,000 units monthly. It has a payback period of less than three years.
The company plans to utilize the power to reduce its daytime power costs through a behind-the-meter arrangement.
Under the second phase, it is also planning another ground-mounted project of approximately 2.5 MW.
In June 2025, Polaris Renewable Solutions set up a 600 KW rooftop solar solution for multinational food company General Mills India.
Mercom India hosts a pan-India ‘C&I Clean Energy Meet’ series, bringing renewable energy developers and commercial and industrial power consumers together to discuss options for adopting renewable energy. The next event will be held in Mumbai on April 16, 2026.
