The rooftop solar market in Andhra Pradesh continues to face a complex mix of financial and policy-related challenges. While residential demand remains supported by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, adoption across commercial and industrial, rural, and agricultural segments has been slow due to limited financing support and concerns around policy implementation.

While policy interventions such as the production-linked incentive programs and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers have boosted investments in solar manufacturing, factors such as lack of cost competitiveness, technology advancement, raw material availability, and workforce development are still holding the sector back. At its sixth Renewables Summit, Mercom India will bring together some of the brightest minds in the industry to delve into the challenges facing solar cell manufacturing in the country.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency extended the validity of the existing star rating table for solar PV modules under its Standards and Labeling program by six months until December 31, 2026. In October 2023, the government launched the S&L program to certify the quality and energy efficiency of solar modules.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission rejected a wind energy developer’s petition seeking discharge from its obligations under a 200 MW interstate transmission system-connected wind power project. The Commission held that the developer could not rely on difficulties related to land acquisition, delays in obtaining Ministry of Defence clearances, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, or delays in regulatory approvals to avoid signing the power purchase agreement.

The Karnataka High Court quashed the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission’s procedure for verifying the captive status of power projects and users in the state. The Court held that KERC’s methodology for determining the proportional electricity consumption of group captive users was inconsistent with Rule 3 of the Electricity Rules, 2005, and an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court in the case of Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company v. Gayatri Shakti Paper and Board.

The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission allowed the development and commissioning of a 20 MW floating solar power project at Chilwa Tal in the state’s Gorakhpur district through a cost-plus tariff mechanism and permitted Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation to procure power for the project.

REC Power Development and Consultancy announced the winner of the auction for the development of an intrastate transmission project to evacuate power from a 2,000 MW solar park at Ryapte village in Karnataka’s Tumkur district. The tender was floated in March this year.

India’s energy transition is rapidly reshaping the role of battery storage, with businesses across sectors and renewable energy developers increasingly looking beyond conventional backup solutions. As renewable energy capacity expands and industries seek greater control over energy costs, battery energy storage systems are emerging as a critical enabler of grid stability, peak power management, energy independence, and sustainable growth.

NTPC Renewable Energy floated an engineering, procurement, and construction tender to set up a 240 MW/960 MWh interstate transmission system-connected battery energy storage system at its Devikot Solar Project in Rajasthan. Bids must be submitted by July 13, 2026. Bids will be opened on the same day.

The Karnataka Renewable Energy Development invited bids to set up 450MW/900 MWh of battery energy storage systems with Viability Gap Funding support in the state. The two projects will be set up at Huliyurdurga (200 MW/400 MWh) in the Tumkur district and Kushtagi (250 MW/500 MWh) in the Koppal district.

MSP Steel & Power announced it will procure 10 MW of solar power from Elevate Solar Energy at a tariff of ₹3.17 (~$0.034)/kWh. The power will be supplied from Elevate’s 50 MW project under development in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar district. As part of the procurement, MSP Steel will acquire a 26% shareholding in Elevate.

The New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh issued a request for selection to empanel vendors to set up grid-connected rooftop solar projects at government institutions in the state, under the renewable energy service company mode.

The Ministry of Energy of Mongolia invited expressions of interest for the procurement of power from 110 MW solar systems and 52 MW/188 MWh battery energy storage projects across five sites in the country. The last date to submit EoIs is August 16, 2026.
