IEX Clocks Record Monthly Trading Volume in August, Rises to 13.94 BU

Green Market volume increased 17.3% to 1,091 MU

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded its highest-ever monthly electricity traded volume of 13,938 million units (MUs) in August 2026, an increase of 20.2% year-on-year (YoY).

According to government data, India’s energy consumption touched 169.01 billion units (BUs) in August 2026, registering a YoY growth of 12.85%. The rise in power demand pushed buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market up 61.7% YoY, resulting in an increase in prices.

The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market stood at ₹4.88 (~$0.0516)/kWh, a 22% increase year-on-year. The average market clearing price in the Real-Time Market stood at ₹4.41 (~$0.0467)/kWh in August, an increase of 30.4% YoY.

Electricity market

The Day-Ahead Market (DAM), including HP-DAM, achieved 5,517 MU volume in August 2026 as compared to 4,797 MU volume in August 2025, registering an increase of 15% YoY.

The Real-Time Electricity Market (RTM) volume increased to 5,565 MU in August 2026, from 5,029 MU in August 2025, marking an uptick of 10.6% YoY.

The Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including HPTAM comprising contingency, daily, weekly, and monthly contracts up to three months, traded 1,765 MU in August 2026, as compared to 835 MU volume in August 2025, and clocked an increase of 111.3% YoY.

Green market

IEX Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, achieved 1,091 MU volume during August 2026 as compared to 930 MU in August 2025, an increase of 17.3% YoY.

The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM) for August 2026 stood at ₹3.92 (~$0.0415)/kWh, a 5.1% YoY hike.

Renewable Energy Certificate Market

A total of 291,000 RECs were traded in August 2026, down 86.6% YoY.

Trading sessions were held on August 12 and August 27, 2026, with clearing prices of ₹370 (~$3.91)/REC and ₹350 (~$3.70)/REC, respectively.

The next REC trading sessions at the exchange are scheduled for September 9 and September 30, 2026.

In July 2026, IEX traded 13,527 MU of electricity, a 7.7% YoY increase.

IEX reported revenue from operations of ₹1.58 billion (~$16.33 million) in the first quarter of the financial year  2027, an 11.4% YoY increase from ₹1.42 billion (~$14.66 million). Earnings per share for the quarter stood at ₹1.52 (~$0.016), compared to ₹1.36 (~$0.014) in the corresponding quarter last year.
