IEX Electricity Volume Rises 16% YoY to 37,534 MU in Q1 FY 2027

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) traded 37,534 million units (MU) of electricity in the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year (FY) 2027, a 15.9% year-over-year (YoY) increase.
During the quarter, India’s energy consumption reached 485.4 billion units (BUs), growing 8.8% YoY. Peak power demand touched an all-time high of 270.8 GW in May 2026 due to hotter than usual summer.
The market-clearing price in the day-ahead market (DAM) grew 15.7% YoY to ₹5.1 (~$0.054)/kWh. The market-clearing price in the real-time market (RTM) stood at ₹4.5 (~$0.047)/kWh, up 13.8% YoY.
A total of 977,000 renewable energy certificates (RECs) were traded during Q1 FY 2027, declining 81.4% YoY.
On sessions held on June 10 and 24, a total of 249,000 RECs were traded at clearing prices of ₹400 (~$4.2)/REC and ₹395 (~$4.14), respectively. REC traded volume in June 2026 reduced 92.3% YoY, with sell bids declining 85.9% YoY, leading to a rise in clearing prices during the month.
The next REC trading sessions at the Exchange are scheduled on July 8 and 29.
Green Market
IEX Green Market, comprising the green day-ahead and green term-ahead market segments, achieved 2,827 MU volume in Q1, increasing 6.3% YoY. The segment reached 953 MU in June 2026, down 1.2% YoY from 964 MU.
The weighted average price in the green day-ahead market (G-DAM) for June 2026 was ₹3.79 (~$0.04)/kWh.
Electricity Market
The DAM, including the high-price day-ahead market, recorded 13,344 MU in Q1 FY 2027, up 7.6% from 12,399 MU in the same quarter last year. The segment traded 4,304 MU, down 6.6% YoY from 4,610 MU.
The RTM traded 16,019 MU during the quarter, increasing 23.5% YoY. In June 2026, RTM volumes rose 25.7% YoY to 5,420 MU from 4,312 MU.
The day-ahead contingency and term-ahead market (TAM), including the high price TAM, traded 5,344 MU, up 22.9% YoY. The segment traded 1,533 MU, rising 58.7% from 966 MU in June 2025.
IEX traded 12,983 MU of electricity in May 2026, an 18.6% YoY increase.
