The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported a monthly electricity traded volume of 12,341 million units (MU) in April 2026, increasing 16.6% year-over-year (YoY).
India’s electricity consumption reached 154 billion units (BUs), up 4% YoY. April witnessed dynamic weather conditions. The weather ranged from unseasonal rainfall to peak summer heat. This drove electricity demand to an all-time high of 256 GW.
Electricity Market
Strong demand drove buy bids up 31% YoY in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM). Meanwhile, sell bids rose 35% YoY. The average market-clearing price stood at ₹5.26 (~$0.055)/kWh, a 1% rise over last year.
However, unseasonal rainfall at the beginning of April moderated demand, keeping DAM prices below ₹3.5 (~$0.037)/kWh on multiple days.
IEX said the Real-Time Market (RTM) evolved similarly, with prices touching near-zero levels across multiple time blocks, supported by surplus renewable energy during solar hours. The average RTM market-clearing price was ₹4.82 (~$0.051)/kWh, growing 5.4% YoY.
The RTM recorded its highest-ever single-day trade of 250 MU.
Traded volumes in DAM, including High Price (HP)-DAM, reached 4,624 MU, rising 8.7% YoY from 4,254 MU. RTM traded volume grew to 5,069 MU, increasing 30.2% from 3,893 MU from the same period last year.
The Day Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including HPTAM, comprising contingency, daily, weekly, and monthly contracts up to three months, traded 1,807 MU, rising 9.1% YoY from 1,656 MU.
Green Market
The green power market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM) and Green Term-Ahead Market, reached 841 MU in April 2026, up 7.5% from 782 MU in April 2025. The weighted average price in G-DAM stood at ₹3.79 (~$0.04)/kWh, reducing 6.9% YoY.
Renewable Energy Certificate Market
A total of 118,000 renewable energy certificates (RECs) were traded during the month. However, REC volumes reduced 59.4% YoY. The RECs were traded on April 8 and 29, 2026, with ₹339 (~$3.56)/REC and ₹370 (~$3.89)/REC, respectively.
Sell bids decreased by approximately 87% YoY, while buy bids increased by 42% YoY, resulting in higher clearing prices.
The next REC trading sessions are scheduled for May 13 and May 27, 2026.
The IEX reported the highest-ever electricity trading volume of 141 BU in FY 2026, up 17% YoY.
