An overwhelming majority of rooftop solar systems installed under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana are above 3 kW, according to statistics furnished by the government in Parliament.

Central Government subsidies for a 3-kW system are capped at ₹78,000 (~$814.76). States such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha offer top-up subsidies ranging from ₹10,000 (~$104.48) to ₹60,000 (~$626.88) for different capacities, making the economics of larger-capacity systems more attractive.

Over 1.89 million beneficiaries have been reported by distribution companies to have received zero electricity bills after the installation of rooftop systems.

As of July 24, 2026, 40.01 rooftop solar systems have been installed under the program, with systems with capacity of 3 kW and above comprising 3.59 million. Systems up to 2 kW comprise 68,857, and systems between 2 kW and 3 KW number 341,066.

In all, 4.82 million households have benefited from the program, Minister of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Pralhad Joshi informed the Lok Sabha.

Joshi said the pace of the program’s implementation is increasing. During the initial phase, it took a few months to cover rooftop systems for 100,000 households, and now, for the same coverage, it takes just around seven days.

Measures had been taken to simplify the regulatory approval process by waiving the technical feasibility requirement and introducing auto load enhancement up to 10 kW. The net metering agreement has been incorporated into the application on the National Portal, eliminating the need for a separate physical agreement.

Gujarat continues to lead the states in the number of installations at 763,502, followed by Uttar Pradesh (696,345), Maharashtra (687,819), Kerala (303,685), and Rajasthan (270,087).

The top five states account for over two-thirds of rooftop solar systems installed in the country.

Maharashtra topped the list, with 418,105 consumers receiving zero electricity bills in at least one billing cycle, followed by Gujarat with 416,357 and Kerala with 192,475. Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan recorded 175,091 and 168,101 such consumers, respectively.

Loans disbursed under the program totaled ₹316.52 billion (~$3.31 billion) across all system capacities, with ₹212.89 billion (~$2.22 billion) for systems between 2 kW and 3 kW.

Largely driven by installations under PM Surya Ghar, India added 2.7 GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first quarter of 2026, a year-over-year growth of 125.4% from 1.2 GW, according to Mercom India’s Q1 2026 India Rooftop Solar Market Report.

The PM Surya Ghar program has a target of installing 10 million rooftop solar systems by March 2027. With about eight months to go, the program has significant ground to cover to reach the target.
