					</table><p><a href="https://www.nxtra.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nxtra Data</a>, <a href="https://www.airtel.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Airtel’s</a> data centre arm, has outlined its sustainability strategy and performance for the financial year (FY) 2025 in its Sustainability Report, highlighting progress in energy transition, climate action, energy efficiency, water stewardship, and green buildings.</p>
<p>The company highlighted that an efficient energy transition was the need of the hour to meet the growing power demands of data centers.</p>
<p><strong>Energy Transition</strong></p>
<p>Nxtra’s energy transition strategy centers on reducing reliance on conventional grid power and progressively increasing the integration of cleaner energy, supported by an efficiency-first design.</p>
<p>The company increased renewable energy usage by 14.5% in FY25 compared to the previous fiscal year. It also transitioned 49% of total electricity consumption in the core data centers to renewable energy and contracted 482,800 MWh of renewable energy so far to power operations across 65+ facilities.</p>

<p>Nxtra has become the first data center company in India to join the prestigious RE100 initiative, pledging to source 100% of our electricity from renewable energy.</p>
<p>The company is aligned with the broader goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2031. It has already made substantial progress on this journey, contracting 482,800 MWh of renewable energy to date and significantly reducing our emissions footprint.</p>
<p><strong>Carbon Emissions</strong></p>
<p>The company measures and reports its greenhouse gas emissions in line with GHG Protocol requirements, covering data collection, consolidation, and verification through structured internal controls.</p>
<p>Its carbon reduction strategy continues to evolve in response to the growing climate ambitions of our clients, many of whom are prioritising supply chain decarbonisation and greater transparency.</p>
<p>In FY25, Nxtra adopted a refined emissions boundary methodology to improve the accuracy and consistency of its greenhouse gas accounting, particularly for energy consumption associated with client operations.</p>
<p>Nxtra’s emissions disclosures for FY25 were independently assured by TÜV Rheinland, which concluded that the reported data present a fair and balanced view of the company’s sustainability performance.</p>
<p><strong>Energy Efficiency</strong></p>
<p>Energy efficiency remains the primary lever for reducing Nxtra’s environmental footprint. The company focuses on optimizing power usage effectiveness through advanced cooling technologies, efficient electrical systems, and real-time monitoring of energy performance across data centres.</p>
<p>Continuous tracking of energy intensity per MW of IT load allows Nxtra to benchmark performance against global best practices and identify efficiency gains as capacity expands.</p>
<p><strong>Green Buildings</strong></p>
<p>The report highlights Nxtra’s emphasis on sustainable design and green building practices, including energy-efficient architecture, optimized cooling layouts, sustainable materials, and integrated environmental controls.</p>
<p>It has selected all core and subcomponents, including electrical, mechanical, control systems, and telecom equipment, with a focus on operational efficiency and minimising physical footprint.</p>
<p>Green building principles are applied at the design stage to reduce lifecycle environmental impact, improve energy and water efficiency, and enhance resilience of facilities operating in resource-constrained regions</p>
<p><strong>Climate Strategy</strong></p>
<p>Nxtra positions climate action as a core business imperative, driven by the rapid expansion of energy-intensive data centre infrastructure. The company integrates climate risk assessment into site selection, capacity planning, and operational decision-making, particularly regarding water stress, energy availability, and extreme weather risks.</p>
<p>Last October, Nxtra <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/nxtra-to-source-power-from-ampins-13-mw-solar-project-in-maharashtra" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that it would procure power from a 13.2 MW solar project in captive mode from AMPIN Energy C&amp;I Sixteen’s project in Maharashtra.</p>
<p>Earlier, Nxtra had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/nxtra-partners-with-ampin-energy-to-expand-renewable-energy-use" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a new power wheeling agreement with AMPIN for the supply of 125.65 MW of solar-wind hybrid energy.</p>

<p>The use of renewable energy went up 41% from the previous year, the company said in its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report.</p>
<p>Nxtra claimed that 220,541 MWh of its energy requirements were met with green power wheeling arrangements and captive rooftop solar installations, a 166% increase from the 2020-21 baseline.</p>
<p>&#8220;Additionally, in collaboration with the Airtel group, we have invested in 14 companies to develop renewable power plants, enabling the sourcing of over 427,859 MWh of green energy for our data centers. Furthermore, rooftop solar plants have been installed at both core and edge data centers, covering 29 locations,&#8221; Nxtra&#8217;s ESG report said.</p>
<p>Ashish Arora, Chief Executive Officer, Nxtra, said, &#8220;The future of data centers lies in our ability to harmonize intelligent infrastructure with sustainability. By integrating ESG initiatives into our business model, we enhance our operational efficiency and pave the way for a more sustainable digital economy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nxtra said it has set a 70% renewable energy consumption target for its core data centers by 2027 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2031. &#8220;This goal will be realized through several key initiatives, including sourcing renewable energy via open access mediums through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), installing captive solar PV plants at our core data centers, commissioning fuel cell-based captive power plants and retrofitting HSD-based backup power generators with gas-based systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>Earlier this year, the company <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/airtel-nxtra-procure-clean-energy-data-centers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">partnered</a> with <a href="https://ampin.energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AmpIn Energy</a> and <a href="https://amplussolar.com/get-a-plant?source=get_a_plant_rooftopsolar&amp;utm_source=search_rooftop&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwoJa2BhBPEiwA0l0ImPBQ1FB_jvLLIxtBn1HUTVCy4_1XiKTXNyBCspfmXdfS23hwswDY6BoCoPoQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amplus Energy</a> to set up captive solar and wind power projects totaling 72.3 MW capacity to power its data centers.</p>
<p>The 25-year agreements will help Nxtra reduce its carbon footprint by around 99,547 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.</p>
<p>The company <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/airtels-data-center-renewable-power-in-fy24" target="_blank" rel="noopener">planned</a> to purchase 23,000 MWh of renewable energy by the fourth quarter of FY 2024.</p>


Nxtra’s Data Centers Meet 38% of Energy Needs from Renewable Sources

					</table><p><a href="https://www.adaniconnex.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AdaniConneX</a>, a data center solutions provider and a joint venture between <a href="https://www.adanienterprises.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adani Enterprises</a> and <a href="https://www.edgeconnex.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EdgeConneX</a><u>, </u>has established sustainability-linked financing to raise $1.44 billion to fund its renewable-powered data centers and enable digital infrastructure growth in the country.</p>
<p>The company said the upcoming data center facilities would leverage technologies and renewable energy solutions to minimize the ecological footprint while optimizing operational efficiency.</p>
<p>With an initial commitment of $875 million, the financing has an accordion feature to extend the commitment to $1.44 billion. With this, AdaniConneX’s construction financing pool stands at $1.65 billion, in addition to the initial construction facility of $213 million executed last June.</p>
<p>According to a press release by the company, the facility is a solution to a syndicated guarantee-backed assurance program that is in tandem with the projects&#8217; procurement strategy. The company executed definitive agreements for the financing with eight international lenders such as <a href="https://www.ing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ING Bank</a> N.V., <a href="https://www.intesasanpaolo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Intesa Sanpaolo</a>, <a href="https://www.kfw-ipex-bank.de/International-financing/KfW-IPEX-Bank/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KfW IPEX</a>, <a href="https://www.bk.mufg.jp/global/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MUFG Bank</a>, <a href="https://www.natixis.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Natixis</a>, <a href="https://www.sc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Standard Chartered</a> Bank, <a href="https://www.societegenerale.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Societe General</a><u>,</u> and Sumitomo Mitsubishi Banking Corporation (<a href="https://www.smbcgroup.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SBMC</a>).</p>
<p>The company has plans to build an environmentally and socially conscious 1 GW data center infrastructure platform. Given the accelerating demand, this access to a wide pool of liquidity will bolster the company’s strategy to fast-track the implementation of portfolio assets.</p>
<p>“Construction financing is a core element of the AdaniConneX capital management plan, enabling us to deliver a data center solution firmly rooted in sustainability and environmental stewardship. We are delighted to embark on this journey with our esteemed international banking partners,” said Jayakumar Janakaraj, CEO of AdaniConneX.</p>
<p>This also aligns with AdaniConneX&#8217;s efforts to drive a safety-first culture, delivering world-class Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) by adopting best global practices and leveraging renewable energy resources, the release said.</p>
<p>Last month, a $409 million green bond issued by Adani Green Energy <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/adanis-green-bond-issue-receives-over-3-billion-bids#:~:text=In%20the%20same%20month,%20the,since%20the%20initial%20project%20financing." target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> bids amounting to nearly $3 billion.</p>
<p>This comes five years after the Adani group <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/adani-partner-us-firm-data-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">partnered</a> with U.S. firms to establish green energy-powered data centers in India.</p>


AdaniConneX Raises $1.44 Billion in Green Financing for Data Centers

<p>Digital communications solutions provider Bharti Airtel announced that it will begin sourcing power from a 14 MW captive solar project to meet the energy requirements of its core and edge data centers in Uttar Pradesh.</p>
<p>The facility in Tilhar is the first of the two solar projects being set up by Airtel in partnership with AMP Energy. The second project at Begampur is expected to go live in the next quarter.</p>
<p>These projects are being set up as part of its mission to reduce its carbon footprint.</p>
<p>Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/airtel-makes-foray-solar-group-captive-model/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in 2019 that Bharti Airtel had entered into an agreement with AMPSolar Evolution, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMPSolar Technology, to acquire 26% equity shares and compulsorily convertible debentures as part of a group captive solar project deal.</p>
<p>Data centers, which play a crucial role in the digital ecosystem, have large power requirements. ‘Nxtra by Airtel’ currently operates ten large and 120 edge data centers across India. During FY 2022, it aims to meet over 50% of its power requirements through renewable energy sources and contribute to Airtel’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.</p>
<p>Rajesh Tapadia, CEO, Nxtra Data, said: “As a responsible corporate, green energy is a top agenda for Airtel. We take pride in being ahead of the curve when it comes to implementing sustainability initiatives. We will continue to accelerate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint through multiple interventions.”</p>
<p>Airtel said that it was aligned to the Paris Climate Accord. The company proactively implements clean fuel-based power solutions for its towers, data centers, switching centers, and other facilities. In FY 20, the company has achieved an average Carbon Emission reduction (CO2 /PB) of ~114% from the base year 2011-12 against the Department of Telecom’s target of 30%.</p>
<p>As part of its commitment to using clean energy, Airtel had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/airtel-buys-stake-in-avaada-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acquired</a> equity shares in Avaada MHBuldhana Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle owning and operating a captive solar power project in Maharashtra.</p>
<p>Many large corporations in India are slowly getting into renewable energy. As most states have made it extremely difficult to procure solar energy through open access by adding a slew of additional charges on consumers, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/group-captive-solar-market-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">group captive</a> has become a more attractive model.</p>
<p>Unlike an individual captive or third-party sale power project, a group captive is an arrangement through which a developer sets up a power project for the collective use of multiple industrial or commercial consumers who have 26% equity in the project and must consume 51% of the power produced.</p>


Airtel’s Data Centers Go Green Sourcing Power from a 14 MW Captive Solar Project

<p>The <a href="https://www.adani.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Adani Group</a> has announced that it has partnered with <a href="https://www.digitalrealty.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Digital Realty</a> to develop and operate renewable energy powered data centers in India.</p>
<p>The two companies plan to jointly evaluate developing and operating data centers, data center parks, and cultivating undersea cable provider communities of interest across India.</p>
<p>Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), currently has a total renewable capacity of 5.29 GW, of which 2.42 GW is operational.</p>
<p>On the other hand, Digital Realty, San Francisco-based company, supports data centers, colocation and interconnection strategies of over 2,000 firms throughout North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia.</p>
<p>Speaking on the development, the Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani, said, “Data center infrastructure is critical to enable a Digital India and this partnership leverages several of the capabilities developed by the Adani Group in power generation, transmission, retail electricity distribution, access to waterfronts through the ports business, and real estate management.”</p>
<p>“As one of the top five renewable energy companies in the world, our ability to power our data centers with solar and wind energy is unique and addresses some of the challenges of building and operating data centers,” Adani added.</p>
<p>Globally, multinational companies are switching to renewable energy for their power needs to not only reduce their carbon footprint but to save costs. By setting up data centers in parts of the world with abundant renewable energy potential and a lower cost per MW, these corporations hope to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels while enjoying the cost benefits.</p>
<p>Data centers are power-hungry and have been shifting towards renewable energy.</p>
<p>In July 2019, Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/tata-power-partners-ntt-com-netmagic-solar-project-solapur/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a> that Tata Power partnered with NTT-Com-Netmagic to build its first 50 MW solar power project in Solapur, Maharashtra, to generate power for its data centers across the state. The project is expected to reduce 70,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Google <a href="https://mercomindia.com/google-first-solar-deal-taiwan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">signed</a> a long-term agreement to buy solar power from a 10 MW solar array, which is a part of a larger solar farm located in Tainan City, Taiwan, to help boost the carbon-free profile of its local data center.</p>
<p>Last year, Facebook said it <a href="https://mercomindia.com/facebook-100-percent-renewables-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">aims</a> to power all its facilities, including office and data centers, with 100%bclean and renewable energy by 2020.</p>
