					</table><p>Long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies are expected to see meaningful cost reductions by 2030, driven by technological improvements, increased manufacturing scale, and supply chain maturation, according to a new study released by the <a href="https://ldescouncil.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LDES Council</a> in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (<a href="https://www.epri.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EPRI</a>).</p>
<p>In this study, “cost reductions” are defined strictly in terms of changes in total plant cost (TPC), which is used as the primary capital expenditure metric.</p>
<p><strong>Technology Groupings</strong></p>
<p>The report assesses five LDES categories.</p>
<p>Intraday electrochemical storage includes sodium-sulfur, vanadium redox flow, and iron-salt batteries for 8 to 12-hour power-to-power applications, competing with lithium-ion systems at longer durations due to lower marginal energy costs.</p>
<p>Intraday pumped heat energy storage (PHES) converts electricity to thermal energy and back using hot and cold reservoirs and is assessed only for 2030 due to limited near-term readiness.</p>

<p>Multi-day storage includes technologies capable of more than 100 hours of discharge, such as e-fuels, reversible fuel cells, metal-air, and geomechanical systems, defined by use case rather than technology.</p>
<p>Thermal energy storage (TES) focuses on power-to-heat applications using sensible or phase-change materials for industrial and district heating, with thermal efficiencies of 95–97%.</p>
<p><strong>Cost Trends and Outlook</strong></p>
<p>Cost ranges are expected to tighten by 2030, indicating convergence as technologies mature, manufacturing scales up, and supply chains stabilize.</p>
<p>TES and intraday electrochemical storage show the widest cost spreads in 2025, reflecting early-stage heterogeneity, while intraday PHES and multi-day storage report only 2030 scenarios due to insufficient 2025 data.</p>
<p>Intraday electrochemical energy storage is projected to have the fastest cost decline, with an average TPC reduction of approximately 37% between 2025 and 2030. On a U.S. Lower 48 basis, the 2025 TPC range is wide, spanning from $220 to $572/kWh. By 2030, the TPC range will narrow to $244-$358/kWh.</p>

<p>Thermal energy storage is projected to reduce TPC by 16% to 47% by 2030, suggesting that many technologies remain early on the cost curve.</p>

<p>Intraday compressed gas energy storage shows more moderate projected reductions of 6% to 25% by 2030, reflecting relatively mature mechanical components combined with ongoing system optimization. The 2025 TPC range is estimated at $158 to $471/kWh, narrowing to $118 to $445/kWh in 2030 on a normalized U.S. basis.</p>

<p>Growth rates cannot be calculated for intraday PHES and multi-day energy storage because 2025 data are unavailable, although PHES exhibits relatively narrow cost ranges in 2030.</p>
<p><strong>Investment Metrics, Risks, and Policy</strong></p>
<p>The report emphasizes that capital expenditure is the primary benchmarking metric for LDES, rather than the levelized cost of storage. LDES value is framed around reliability, long-duration resilience, and capacity adequacy.</p>
<p>Multi-day systems achieve very low dollar-per-kilowatt-hour values primarily due to long discharge durations rather than low total capital costs. Operations and maintenance costs generally account for a small share of TPC, but uncertainty remains high due to limited commercial operating experience.</p>
<p>Key risks highlighted include medium cost certainty levels, changing technology mixes between 2025 and 2030 datasets, unclear future operations and maintenance cost structures, and differences in cost definitions and system boundaries across studies. Many technologies remain at technology readiness level (TRL) 6 or lower, leaving commercial deployment timelines uncertain.</p>
<p>In December 2024, the LDES Council <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/long-duration-energy-storage-must-scale-50-times-to-meet-net-zero-demands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that LDES must scale up 50 times faster than projected in its 2024 Annual Report. According to the report, LDES solutions of more than 1 TW and up to 8 TW are needed by 2030 and 2040, respectively, globally to achieve the net-zero emissions target.</p>


Long-Duration Energy Storage Costs Expected to Decline Significantly by 2030: Report

					</table><p><a href="https://www.ntpc.co.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NTPC</a> has invited expressions of interest (EoI) to develop a pilot or utility-scale project for a compressed air-based, including liquified air-based, long-duration energy storage system (LDES) with a storage capacity of up to 1,000 MWh.</p>
<p>The last date to submit the bids is February 23, 2026, and bids will be opened the following day.</p>
<p>The EoI does not require any earnest money deposit or bank guarantee at this stage.</p>
<p>NTPC has stated that the objective of this EoI is to evaluate the current market landscape, technology readiness, technical performance, and operational characteristics of the technologies, and to assess their suitability and techno-commercial viability for pilot/utility-scale project implementation under Indian grid and site conditions.</p>
<p>The LDES technologies are well-suited for long-duration applications, with discharge durations of eight hours or more. This capability is particularly relevant for effectively utilizing excess renewable generation during solar hours, while providing sufficiently long discharge to manage evening peaks and prolonged non-solar-period demand that cannot be addressed by short-duration storage systems.</p>
<p>NTPC has stated that the possibility of implementation of pilot projects may also be explored under any of the following project implementation models, based on the techno-commercial viability of the technologies:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>EPC + O&amp;M: </strong>Project executed on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis with ownership retained by NTPC, and complete EPC, along with the operation andmaintenance to be carried out by the contractor for a defined period.</li>
<li><strong>Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) Model: </strong>Developer finances, owns, and operates the project and provides storage services to NTPC under a long-term agreement.</li>
<li><strong>Build, Own, Operate &amp; Transfer (BOOT): </strong>Developer builds and operates the project for a concession period, after which the asset is transferred to NTPC.</li>
<li><strong>Shared/Hybrid Model: </strong>Project is implemented with shared investment, ownership, and/or operational responsibilities between NTPC and the developer.</li>
</ul>
<p>Intellectual property rights for the core technology will remain with the technology provider. However, the intellectual property generated during pilot or utility-scale implementation may be co-owned with NTPC, depending on technology readiness levels and funding arrangements.</p>
<p>Last month, NTPC <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/ntpc-floats-epc-tender-for-2-6-gwh-battery-energy-storage-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floated</a> an EPC tender to set up 2,670 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at nine of its thermal power stations.</p>
<p>Earlier, NTPC Green Energy had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/ntpc-green-epc-tender-battery-storage-systems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">invited</a> bids for the EPC of 80 MW/320 MWh BESS at Kerala State Electricity Board’s Pothencode and Sreekantapuram substations.</p>

					</table><p>Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) must scale up to 50 times faster than is currently projected, per the 2024 Annual Report by the <a href="https://www.ldescouncil.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LDES Council</a>.</p>
<p>According to the report, LDES solutions of more than 1 TW and up to 8 TW are needed by 2030 and 2040, respectively, on a global scale to achieve the net zero emissions target. However, LDES solutions of only about 120 GW have been installed to date, and an additional  113 GW are planned with a projected capacity of 222 GW by 2035.</p>

<p>The LDES Council recommends setting a global storage target of 1.5 TW by 2030 to support the COP28 goal of deploying 11 TW renewables by the same year.</p>
<p>The manufacturing sector causes global carbon emissions, and the electricity sector accounts for 28%. As per the report, LDES can improve energy supply security, reduce wasted renewable energy, curtail mining activities, and unlock new possibilities that short-term storage only partially addresses.</p>

<p>LDES  also enables renewables integration on electricity grids and maximizes energy utilization, including providing round-the-clock heat for industrial applications and producing alternative fuels like hydrogen from electricity.</p>
<p>The report states that India needs 170 GW of low LDES and 260 GW of high LDES by 2050.</p>
<p><strong>Need for action</strong></p>
<p>In the report, the council calls for faster LDES deployment, procurement, and supportive policies to promote and accelerate existing technologies that deliver immediate and enduring benefits to electricity grids and end users.</p>
<p>LDES Council members have established projects with eight hours or more storage durations on six continents. The council called for all nationally determined contributions to be updated in 2025 to include clear and actionable targets.</p>
<p><strong>Funding</strong></p>
<p>According to the report, funding for LDES solutions increased in 2023, with roughly 70% of investments comprising grants and seed funding. These projects are driven by new decarbonization initiatives by national and regional governments and the sustainability commitments by large corporations, including approximately two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies.</p>
<p>The report estimates that the buildout of up to 8 TW of LDES solutions by 2040 will represent a $4 trillion investment opportunity that could deliver as much as $540 billion in annual system cost savings.</p>
<p><strong>Large-scale deployment</strong></p>
<p>The LDES Council has identified seven enablers for large-scale LDES deployment in the report—raising awareness, assessing need, setting LDES targets, allocating pre-commercial funding, providing market access and long-term revenue visibility, implementing efficient grid pricing, and enabling ease of connection.</p>
<p>The council calls for an increase in government efforts to deploy and scale LDES technology to meet growing energy demands, emphasizing procurement targets in New South Wales and Victoria in Australia, New York, and California in the U.S., Chile, and Italy.</p>
<p>The report states that advancing policy-enabling strategies and setting a specific target for energy storage deployment at COP29 will provide the needed clarity, direction, and accountability for policymakers, industry, investors, and stakeholders to advance LDES deployment.</p>
<p>Corporate funding for energy storage rose 15% YoY in the first nine months of 2024, while it decreased 33% for smart grids in the U.S., according to the 9 M and Q3 2024 Funding and M&amp;A for Storage and Grid Report by <a href="https://mercomcapital.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mercom Capital Group</a>.</p>
<p>According to a Mercom report, the commercial viability and widespread adoption of energy storage solutions can <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/india-should-focus-on-domestic-battery-storage-technology-development" target="_blank" rel="noopener">address</a> key issues in clean energy deployment, including grid safety and intermittency, while leveraging the vast potential of various energy storage forms.</p>

					</table><p><a href="https://essinc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESS Tech</a>, a manufacturer of long-duration energy storage systems, and Germany-based energy provider <a href="https://www.leag.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LEAG</a> have partnered to construct a 50 MW/500 MWh iron flow battery system at the Boxberg power plant site in Germany.</p>
<p>Estimated to cost an initial €200 million (~$218 million), the project aims to accelerate the clean energy transition by combining renewable generation with long-duration energy storage (LDES) using ESS&#8217;s innovative iron flow battery technology.</p>
<p>The venture is expected to serve as a standard model for LEAG&#8217;s plan to deploy 2-3 GWh of storage, transforming its power plant locations.</p>
<p>The project anticipates additional financial support from investors and stakeholders and is scheduled for commissioning in 2027.</p>
<p>ESS&#8217;s iron-based LDES technology utilizes safe and sustainable battery chemistry, offering cost-effective utility-scale energy storage. ESS manufactures its systems near Portland, Oregon, in the U.S. and has already deployed them in commercial microgrid projects, with utility-scale initiatives underway in the U.S. and Australia.</p>
<p>Eric Dresselhuys, CEO of ESS, expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with LEAG, emphasizing its potential to establish a blueprint for utilities and communities worldwide transitioning from coal to clean, renewable energy. Integrating renewables with long-duration energy storage ensures the reliable delivery of clean energy and presents economic opportunities and a cleaner environment for Germany.</p>
<p>LEAG, which operates large-scale lignite mining and coal-fired generation in Eastern Germany, plans to transform the coal-dependent region into Germany&#8217;s Green Powerhouse. The company envisions the development of 7-14 GW of renewable generation, paired with 2-3 GWh of energy storage and 2 GW of green hydrogen production.</p>
<p>The company expects these technologies together to establish a net-zero-carbon baseload energy system. LEAG&#8217;s ambitious plans aim not only to replace baseload coal generation but also to utilize short-duration storage, LDES, and hydrogen for replacing natural gas for grid balancing.</p>
<p>ESS Tech <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/iron-ess-techs-q4-net-loss-narrows" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> a net loss of $77.97 million in 2022, a year-over-year improvement of 83.7% compared to $477.41 million in 2021.</p>
<p>The announced Energy Storage project funding <a href="https://mercomcapital.com/product/q1-2023-funding-ma-report-storage-grid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">came</a> in at $2 billion in nine deals in the first quarter of 2023, compared to $749 million raised in seven deals in the last quarter of 2022.</p>

					</table><p>Thermal energy storage (TES), as a form of long-duration energy storage (LDES), can help decarbonize roughly 45% of all energy-related emissions by ensuring that industrial operations requiring heat are optimized affordably, said a report by <a href="https://www.ldescouncil.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Long Duration Energy Storage Council</a> and <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McKinsey</a>.</p>
<p>Heat storage technologies can offer a variety of storage durations (from intraday to seasonal) and temperatures (from subzero to 2,400°C) and integrate intermittent renewable energy into a firm supply of heat energy.</p>
<p>For instance, TES can firm the variable offshore wind supply into a more stable supply of clean heat for industrial heating, including high-temperature heating. This can completely change the energy-usage pattern of a typical industrial hub.</p>
<p>Further, the report said, “According to the 2022 LDES benchmark results, TES enables cost-efficient electrification and decarbonization of the most widely used heat applications, namely steam and hot air,” the report said</p>
<p>TES can help double the overall installed capacity of LDES to 2 TW-8 TW by 2040. While this will require capital expenditure of $1.6 trillion-$2.5 trillion, it could lead to savings on system costs by up to $540 billion per year.</p>
<p>The findings establish the need for thermal storage to be part of an integrated energy system that includes electrical and molecular storage to accelerate a decarbonized energy system further.</p>

<p>“More LDES enables an accelerated build-out of renewables and greater optimization of grid utilization. When thermal energy storage is part of the mix of diverse LDES technologies, then the results are clear &#8211; long-duration energy storage continues to be a cost-effective, reliable, sustainable, and secure component of our net-zero future,” LDES Council Executive Director Julia Souder said.</p>
<p><strong>LDES costs are declining</strong></p>
<p>The report said that TES solutions have an internal rate of return of 6% to 28% for chemical plants, 22% for off-grid greenhouses, up to 16% for district heating peaker plants, and 16% for alumina refineries.</p>
<p>It is predicted that LDES costs will decline in the following years, suggesting a 25% to 50% overall capital expenditure (CAPEX) reduction of power LDES technologies by 2040. TES capital expenditure is expected to decline by 5% to 30% for power CAPEX and 15% to 70% for energy storage CAPEX.</p>
<p>Incorporating various storage technologies creates an opportunity to optimize the current utilization and future development of fixed infrastructure assets.</p>
<p>The reports suggest that LDES can enable more efficient grid utilization through supply-and-demand management and storage as a transmission asset, thereby reducing costs related to such expansions. This could prove especially beneficial over the next five to ten years, when the bulk of grids will need to be re-designed, given the typical ten-year development timeline of major grid expansions.</p>
<p>Better grid utilization may, in turn, allow the integration of more renewable generation capacity into the system.</p>

<p>Earlier in August, it had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/us-to-invest-23-billion-for-clean-energy-deployment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> two new program offices – the Grid Deployment Office and the Office of State and Community Energy Programs – to drive more than $23 billion in investments to expand the power grid capacity and deploy cheaper, cheaper, cleaner energy.</p>

					</table><p>The Biden-Harris Administration has announced a $350 million fund for Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) demonstration projects. These storage projects are built to deliver electricity for up to 10 to 24 hours or even longer to support a low-cost, reliable, and carbon-free electric grid.</p>
<p>The LDES Demonstrations Program will be managed by the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) for up to 11 demonstration projects, which are expected to contribute towards cutting the cost of grid-scale energy storage by 90% by 2030.</p>
<p>The DoE will fund up to 50% of each project&#8217;s cost, including a community benefits plan for each applicant. The program aims to fund projects that will overcome the technical and institutional barriers to full-scale deployment of LDES systems by focusing on various techniques for diverse regions.</p>
<p>Letters of Intent are due by December 15, 2022, and full applications are due by March 3, 2023.</p>
<p>As the U.S. moves towards a carbon-free electric grid that relies on accelerated renewable energy generation, the need for reliable LDES to supply enough energy for long periods when energy generation is either reduced or unavailable becomes critical.</p>
<p>Another part of the projects will be funded by Biden&#8217;s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is expected to advance new renewable energy tech, enhance customer and communities&#8217; capabilities to integrate grid storage effectively, increase grid resilience and expand the country&#8217;s global leadership in energy storage.</p>
<p>The new investment will also work with the <a href="https://mercomindia.com/inflation-reduction-act-faster-transition-clean-energy-u-s/">Inflation Reduction Act</a>  &#8211; which provides expanded clean energy tax credits for energy storage installation. The initiative is aimed to give businesses the confidence they require to build and deploy innovative clean energy technologies, which are crucial to reaching the administration&#8217;s goal of a carbon-free electric grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2025.</p>
<p>U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, &#8220;Advancing energy storage technologies is key to making energy generated from clean, renewable resources—like wind and solar—available for 24/7 use and is critical to achieving a decarbonized power grid and reaching President Biden&#8217;s ambitious climate goals.&#8221;</p>
<p>Recently, DoE <a href="https://mercomindia.com/us-invoking-defense-production-act-spur-clean-energy-industry/">announced</a> a request for information (RFI) inviting comments to determine how it can best utilize the Cold War-era Defense Production Act to spur domestic production of clean energy technologies and strengthen grid reliability.
