<a href="https://www.solsystems.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sol Systems</a>, a clean energy project developer and independent power producer, acquired the Wolf Creek Renewable Energy Center from U.S.-based solar project developer <a href="https://www.us-solar.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US Solar</a>.
Located in Saline County, Illinois, the Wolf Creek is a 250 MW solar built atop a subsurface mine and adjacent to Sol’s 342 MWdc Eldorado Solar Project.
US Solar originated and advanced the project through the early stages of development, including land acquisition, permitting, and grid connection. The company secured a conditional land use permit in September 2024.
“Wolf Creek is a natural extension of our work in Saline County,” said Andrew Grin, SVP of M&amp;A and Strategic Partnerships at Sol Systems. “Our team has deep experience building on subsurface mine sites and has developed strong relationships within this community. We’re honored that US Solar saw our work at Eldorado and Tilden and trusted Sol to carry Wolf Creek forward. That trust reflects the strong alignment between our teams and our shared commitment to responsible, community-focused development and land stewardship.”
Wolf Creek is part of US Solar’s portfolio, progressing through the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s DPP-2022 interconnection cycle.
Sol Systems, in March 2026, reached financial close of its 144 MWac Blossom Solar Project in Morrow County, Ohio, and the 180 MWac Nightfall Solar Project in Uvalde County, Texas. A group of lenders comprising BBVA, ING Capital, Intesa Sanpaolo, NAB, Natixis CIB, and NatWest arranged the financing.
The company also <a href="https://www.solsystems.com/news/sol-systems-secures-675-million-in-revolving-construction-financing-to-power-its-clean-energy-pipeline/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> a $675 million revolving construction finance facility in July 2025 to support the development of its upcoming portfolio of solar and storage projects. The funding will support an initial 500 MW of projects planned in Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, with the first group of projects expected to come online by the end of 2026.
According to Mercom’s Annual and Q4 2025 Solar Funding and M&amp;A <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/product/annual-and-q4-2025-solar-funding-and-ma-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, approximately 37.4 GW of solar projects were acquired in 2025, compared to 37.7 GW in 2024.

Sol Systems Acquires 250 MW Wolf Creek Renewable Energy Center

Atlas Renewable Energy, a solar and wind project developer, <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/atlas-renewable-energy-secures-113-million-financing-for-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> a COP 473.77 billion (~$113 million) senior loan to develop, construct, and operate the 201 MW Shangri-La solar project in the Tolima Department of Colombia. IDB Invest and Bancolombia provided the financial package. The project is expected to reach commercial operation at the end of 2025.

Eurowind Energy, a Danish-based renewable energy project developer, <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/eurowind-energy-acquires-eleven-solar-projects-totaling-55-mw-in-portugal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the signing of a shares purchase agreement in August to acquire 11 solar projects with 5 MWac capacity each. Most of the projects are grouped in clusters of three (15 MW each), and all are in the Aveiro district in the center of Portugal. The projects are currently in an advanced stage of development and are expected to reach the ready-to-build stage between Q3 2024 and Q2 2025.
OX2, a solar and energy storage project developer, announced the <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/ox2-sells-two-solar-projects-totaling-137-mw-in-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sale</a> of two solar projects totaling 137 MWp/105 MWac to European Energy, a Danish renewable energy project developer. The deal includes project rights for the 106 MWp/80 MWac Lancaster solar in Victoria and the 31 MWp/25 MWac Mulwala solar in New South Wales, Australia. The construction of both projects is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025, and commercial operations are expected in 2026.
Encavis, a solar and wind project developer, has <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/encavis-secures-67-million-financing-for-114-mw-solar-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a non-recourse project financing agreement of €60.7 million (~$67.10 million) for its 114.2 MW Lindenhof solar project in Germany. Bayerische Landesbank, a long-standing financing partner of ENCAVIS for years, provided the financing, thereby supporting the group’s future growth strategy. In total, the funding includes €46.8 million (~$51.73 million) in term loan facilities, a €2.75 million (~$3.04 million) VAT facility, and €11.1 million (~$12.27 million) in letter of credit facilities.

<a href="https://www.solsystems.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sol Systems</a>, a solar finance and development company, announced the acquisition of over 2 GW of utility-scale hybrid solar and storage projects across the Midwest from Tenaska, the Omaha-based energy company. The portfolio spans multiple states within the Midwest. The projects, each exceeding 100 MW, are expected to reach commercial operation between 2028 and 2029.
Tenaska will continue its collaboration with Sol through the construction of these projects, after which Sol plans to build, own, and operate them. The financial details of the transaction are not disclosed.
The acquisition is part of Sol’s strategic growth plan to scale its renewable energy infrastructure business.

According to Mercom’s 1H and Q2 2024 Solar Funding and M&amp;A <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/product/1h-and-q2-2024-solar-funding-and-ma-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, 113 solar project acquisitions totaling 18.5 GW were announced in 1H 2024 compared to 116 project acquisitions totaling 25.5 GW in 1H 2023.
This week, OX2, a solar and energy storage project developer, entered into an agreement to <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/ox2-sells-119-mw-solar-project-in-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sell</a> a 119 MWac solar project in Victoria, Australia, to an undisclosed buyer. OX2 will manage the construction of the project on behalf of the buyer. The project is expected to be operational in 2027.

Sol Systems Acquires 2 GW of Hybrid Solar and Storage Projects

Ferrovial, a sustainable infrastructure builder and operator, <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/ferrovial-acquires-257-mw-solar-project-in-texas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the acquisition of a 257 MW solar project in Leon County, Texas, U.S. The acquisition agreement includes the construction and operation of the solar project, which is capable of powering over 36,000 households. The company is investing $72 million in the project, which is its first investment in a renewable project in the U.S., where the company has been operating for 20 years. Once operational, the project will generate approximately 475 GWh annually, avoiding the emission of over 195,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Recurrent Energy, a solar project developer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/recurrent-energy-sells-the-middle-road-solar-project-in-the-uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the completion of the sale of its 49.9 MW Middle Road solar project in Harbury, Warwickshire, U.K. Centrica Business Solutions, an integrated energy solutions company, acquired the project. The Middle Road solar project is subsidy-free, fully permitted, and ready for construction. It is expected to begin in the summer of 2024. Commercial operations are expected to commence in 2025. Once operational, it will generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 14,500 households.

Macquarie Asset Management is providing the investment on a fully bilateral basis in the form of a six-year term loan. The facility is subordinated to senior debt and tax equity and is secured against Sol Systems’ ownership interest in the underlying solar projects. The investment is the first tranche of a planned broader collaboration between the companies.
The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. A software services provider has signed a fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) for the electricity produced by the projects.

According to Mercom’s Q1 2024 Solar Funding and M&amp;A <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/product/q1-2024-solar-funding-ma-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, large-scale project funding announced in Q1 2024 came to $13 billion in 62 deals, a decrease of 24% QoQ compared to $17.1 billion in 60 deals in Q4 2023.
Ørsted, a Danish renewable energy company, recently <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/orsted-secures-tax-equity-financing-for-solar-and-energy-storage-portfolio/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secured</a> $680 million in tax equity financing from J.P. Morgan to develop solar and energy storage projects in Arizona and Texas, U.S. The portfolio consists of Eleven Mile Solar Center, a 300 MW solar with a 300 MW/1200 MWh storage project in Pinal County, Arizona, and a 250 MW Sparta Solar project in Mineral, Texas.

Sol Systems Secures $85 Million Debt Financing for Utility-Scale Solar Projects

<a href="https://www.solsystems.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sol Systems</a>, a solar finance and development company acquired a 190 MW solar development project in Uvalde County, Texas, from ABEI Energy, an independent power producer.
The acquisition was a part of Sol Systems’ infrastructure plus impact business expansion. ABEI Energy will continue to support Sol Systems during pre-construction development.
Sol Systems will construct, own, and operate the project.
The project is expected to power over 100,000 homes annually.
Sol so far has developed or financed over 1.4 GW of solar projects valued at more than $1 billion for Fortune 100 companies, local governments, utilities, universities, and schools and has a customer base of over 20,000 across the U.S. The company is actively developing over 1.1 GW of new solar projects nationwide.
“This acquisition builds on Sol Systems’ growing footprint in Texas and is part of a strategic effort to grow our national infrastructure platform,” said Mak Nagle, Chief Development Officer at Sol Systems. “We are excited to expand access to clean energy and to create new opportunities through the lifetime of the project.”
ABEI Energy integrates the management of electricity generation projects from renewable sources through photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind and hydrogen technologies, with over 15 GW under development worldwide.

Sol Systems Acquires 190 MW Texas Solar Project

Washington DC-based <a href="https://www.solsystems.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sol Systems</a>, a solar finance and development company acquired a 540 MW solar portfolio in southeast Illinois from US renewable energy company <a href="https://arevonenergy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arevon Energy</a>.
The portfolio &#8211; under development &#8211; consists of three 180 MW solar energy projects across Hamilton, Randolph, Saline, and White counties. Sol Systems will own and operate the portfolio and work with energy developer Tenaska to develop and construct the projects.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Upon completion, the portfolio will produce enough solar energy per year to power nearly 77 thousand homes.
“This acquisition begins Sol Systems’ significant expansion into utility-scale solar development in Illinois,” said Patty Rollin, Senior Vice President of Utility-Scale Solar Development at Sol Systems. “We are eager to work with Tenaska to construct and deliver clean solar energy to the grid and to create long-term community and ecological benefits at scale,” he added.

In <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/project-finance-brief-lightsource-bp-financing-project/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">September</a> 2020, Helios Infrastructure, a joint venture between Nationwide and Sol Systems, acquired a 50 MW solar project located in West Baton Rouge Parish, and it is now owned and operated by Helios.
According to Mercom’s recently published  Q4 2021 solar funding and M&amp;A <a href="https://cms.mercomindia.com/product/annual-q4-2021-solar-funding-ma-report/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, over 68 GW of solar projects were acquired in 2021.
In 2021, project developers and independent power producers were the most active acquirers of large-scale projects.
