VSL PowerHive, a wholly owned subsidiary of solar module manufacturer Vikram Solar, has announced plans to establish a 7.5 GWh battery energy storage system assembly facility at Oragadam, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The facility, spanning about 165,000 square feet, is scheduled to open in January 2027 and start commercial operations in April 2027.

The company plans to expand the facility’s annual assembly capacity to 15 GWh in subsequent phases.

The project is part of PowerHive’s roadmap to establish 30 GWh of total battery manufacturing capacity by 2030.

The Oragadam facility will assemble lithium iron phosphate battery storage systems for utility-scale and, commercial and industrial applications.

Its product portfolio will include 5.016 MWh and 6.25 MWh liquid-cooled battery storage containers, P261 battery cabinets, utility-scale energy storage systems, and renewable energy-integrated storage solutions.

The company said India’s increasing solar and wind energy capacity has created a higher need for energy storage to support grid stability, shift renewable electricity generation to evening peak demand periods, and facilitate round-the-clock renewable power supply.

In the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, India added 3.6 GWh of battery energy storage capacity, down 22% quarter-over-quarter from the record Q1 additions, according to Mercom India Research’s Q2 and 1H 2026 Energy Storage Landscape Report.

In Q1 of the financial year 2027, Vikram Solar reported a consolidated revenue from operations of ₹15.63 billion (~$164.2 million), a 38% year-over-year increase from ₹11.34 billion (~$119.1 million).

Recently, Vikram Solar expanded its module manufacturing capacity to 15.5 GW. Its 6 GW module manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu, began operations in June 2026.

The company is also building 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity at Gangaikondan, with commercial operations scheduled for FY 2027. It plans to establish 9 GW of wafer and ingot manufacturing capacity at the same location by FY 2029.
