Demand creation is becoming the defining challenge for India’s solar industry as domestic manufacturing capacity expands and export opportunities remain limited, industry leaders said at Mercom India’s Mercom India’s Renewable Energy Summit 2026. The session, titled “India’s Clean Energy Expansion: The Path Forward,” featured Khalid Nadeem, Chief Operating Officer of Solar IPP Business at SAEL, and Raj Prabhu, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder at Mercom Capital Group. Priya Sanjay, Managing Director at Mercom India, opened the session by highlighting India’s shift from coal-led to solar-led capacity additions. Coal dominated annual capacity additions between 2010 and 2016, while solar has led new additions since 2017.

Mercom India announced the winners of the sixth edition of its annual renewable energy industry awards at the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The awards were presented by Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, honoring organizations that have made notable contributions to India’s clean energy transition. The awards evaluated the projects on their uniqueness, execution challenges, complexity, and measurable economic and environmental impact. Tata Power Renewables won the Best Large-Scale Solar Project award for a 1 GW solar project, executed in full compliance with domestic content requirements.

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) (TARIL) secured an order worth over ₹10 billion (~$105.83 million) from POWERGRID to manufacture and supply transformers of various ratings, along with associated works. The order is scheduled to be executed over 30 months. TARIL said that the order comes as India expands and modernizes its power transmission network to support rising electricity demand and the integration of renewable energy. TARIL manufactures power, distribution, and specialty transformers ranging from 5 MVA to 1,000 MVA and up to the 1,200 kV class. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Gujarat and serves customers in power generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy, railways, steel, and infrastructure.
