Maharashtra-based electrical appliance manufacturer Canbara Industries hopes to meet over 28% of its power needs from a 1.5 MW rooftop solar project it installed last year.

The rooftop project at the company’s Palghar facility is expected to yield more than ₹22.55 million (~$241,795) in annual savings.

Before the installation of the solar system, Canbara had a monthly expenditure of more than ₹6.5 million (~$69,270) and an annual expenditure of ₹78 million (~$831,243).

Canbara is an original equipment manufacturer for major electrical appliance brands.

Bhavin Shah, Senior Manager of Accounts and Finance at Canbara Industries, said the company chose to install the solar project to reduce its power costs and insulate itself from high grid tariffs that apply to C&I consumers in Maharashtra.

The shift to solar was also driven by the company’s commitment to sustainability in its operations.

Shah said solar was chosen after an evaluation found wind power not feasible at the location. Another motivation to switch to clean energy was comparatively easier access to financing for solar projects.

The company hopes the rooftop system will pay itself back in 3.4 years.

The project has been set up under a net metering arrangement.

Polaris Renewable Solutions set up the rooftop system in June 2025.

The system comprises Axitec Solar’s 550 Wp Mono PERC modules coupled with Hopewind’s 100 kW and 110 kW inverters. It generates 180,000 units per month and 6,000 units daily.

Recognizing the benefits of solar, the company plans to expand its solar capacity by an additional 780 kW, with the system expected to be commissioned by May 15, 2026.

The company will incur an expenditure of ₹64 million (~$686,246) for the expanded rooftop system.

Canbara is also planning to expand its renewable energy procurement under the open access model at the Palghar facility and install rooftop solar systems at its other facilities. It is also considering integrating the projects with battery energy storage after 2027 if battery costs come down.

Speaking about the challenges during the installation of the rooftop system, Polaris said they had to use an aluminum delta structure to tilt the panel toward the South rather than a flush-mount installation. Since the project was close to the coast, high wind speeds were a key concern.

In March 2026, Polaris set up a 2.63 MW solar project for the corn starch manufacturer Raviraj Corn Products in Solapur.

Mercom India hosts a pan-India ‘C&I Clean Energy Meet’ series, bringing renewable energy developers and commercial and industrial power consumers together to discuss options for adopting renewable energy. The next event will be held in Mumbai on April 16, 2026.
