Piq Energy, a grid planning software company, has raised $5 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round led by Active Impact Investments.
Cisco Foundation, Mobilize AI x Energy Ventures, New Climate Ventures, Ascent Energy Ventures, Umami Capital, CLAI Ventures, and 9Zero also participated in the round.
Piq Energy develops an agentic grid planning platform that integrates with existing engineering tools, bringing models, data, and workflows into a single system. The platform enables developers, utilities, and grid operators to automate engineering studies and evaluate advanced, flexible transmission technologies, helping accelerate interconnection. The funding will be used to develop further and scale the company’s platform.
“This is an important milestone for Piq because it allows us to move faster at a time when the industry can’t afford to stall. Connecting a project to the grid shouldn’t take longer than physically building it. The next terawatt of energy infrastructure is waiting to connect to the grid, not because the physics is hard, but because the engineering can’t keep pace,” said Tom Nudell, CEO and co-founder at Piq Energy.
Since the launch, Piq Energy said its platform has managed more than 1,000 transmission grid models and completed more than 10,000 engineering workflows.
According to Mercom’s Q1 2026 Smart Grid Funding and M&A report, VC funding for Smart Grid companies increased 8% YoY, with $373 million raised in 14 deals in Q1 2026 compared to $346 million in 18 deals in Q1 2025. Smart Grid Communications companies accounted for the largest share of VC funding in Q1 2026, followed by Smart Charging and Advanced Meter Infrastructure.
In 2024, AMPECO, a software platform for EV charging solution providers, raised $26 million in a Series B funding round led by Revaia, along with existing investors Cavalry Ventures, BMW i Ventures, and LAUNCHub Ventures. The latest round brings the company’s total funding to $42 million.
