Sonnedix, an independent solar power producer, has announced the acquisition of a 260 MW battery storage portfolio in Tuscania, Italy, from Sphera Energy.

The portfolio comprises two adjacent standalone battery storage projects. One project has 160 MW of power capacity and a four-hour duration, while the other has 100 MW and the same duration.

The acquisition increases Sonnedix’s global battery storage portfolio to approximately 2.8 GW, according to the company.

Giuseppe Marona, Managing Director Italy at Sonnedix, said, “We’ve gone from building a solar base to building a genuinely flexible energy business here in under two years. Storage changes what we can offer to the grid and how our solar assets perform. I’m excited to see our BESS portfolio continue to grow; Tuscania is a strong addition, and it won’t be the last.”

The transaction follows the company’s acquisition of six solar photovoltaic projects in Italy in March 2026. Long-term power purchase agreements back those projects. Sonnedix said the earlier acquisition increased its total capacity in Italy to more than 1 GW.

The company said battery storage is central to its global portfolio strategy as electricity systems integrate increasing amounts of variable renewable generation.

The company did not disclose the acquisition price, the projects’ development or construction status, or their expected commissioning dates.

Sonnedix is stated to have a total portfolio capacity of 11 GW, including more than 1 GW under construction, 4.8 GW in operation, and a development pipeline of 5 GW.

A total of 7.2 GW of energy storage projects were acquired in Q1 2026, a 227% increase compared to the 2.2 GW in Q1 2025, according to Mercom’s recently released Q1 2026 Energy Storage Funding and M&A report.

In May 2026, GridStor, a developer and operator of utility-scale energy storage projects, acquired the 199 MW/796 MWh Birdseye battery storage project in Adams County, Colorado, from Accelergen.
