A Gujarat-based fabric manufacturer, Prem Industries, expects to achieve a return on investment for its 450 kW rooftop solar project within just 2.5 years, demonstrating that commercial and industrial units can save substantially on power bills by adopting clean energy.
The Ahmedabad-based company, which installed a 450 kW rooftop solar project on its premises in March 2025, is saving ₹4.2 million (~$46,297) annually.
The project, commissioned by Malibu Renewables, now meets 10% of Prem Industries’ power needs.
The solar system utilizes Rayzon Solar’s 550 W Mono PERC modules, coupled with Polycab’s 3 inverters of 110 kW each and one unit of 50 kW.
The rooftop system is expected to generate 54,166 kWh per month and 649,992 kWh per year.
The company plans to use solar power to reduce its overall power costs and improve operational resilience.
Prem Industries was incurring an annual expenditure of over ₹50 million (~$551,155) before installing the rooftop solar project.
Gurpreet Singh Dang, Partner at Prem Industries, said the primary driver of rooftop solar adoption was cost reduction. “Power costs constitute a significant portion of the company’s overall expenses, and lowering them gives businesses a competitive edge.”
He expects the rooftop solar project to pay itself back within 2.5 years.
Dang said that by transitioning to renewable energy, businesses can substantially offset their carbon footprint while strengthening their long-term operational resilience.
Malibu Renewables said ground-mounted projects were not considered in this phase due to the abundance of rooftop space. The option will be considered in the second phase.
The company plans to add another 750 kW rooftop solar capacity at its facility.
Saaket Parikh, Founder at Malibu Renewables, said that around 7,500 sq m of infrastructure upgrades are in the pipeline, which Malibu is taking up on a turnkey basis.
Parikh said that the expansion of rooftop capacity will enable Prem Industries to save approximately 1.08 million units of energy annually, amounting to savings of ₹7.07 million (~$77,933.3).
Mercom India hosts a pan-India ‘C&I Clean Energy Meet’ series, bringing renewable energy developers and commercial and industrial power consumers together to discuss options for adopting renewable energy. The next event will be held in Bhopal on March 13, 2026.
