Renewable energy infrastructure company Mecpower Solutions and solar module manufacturer Navitas Solar have announced plans to jointly establish a 5 GWh battery energy storage system manufacturing (BESS) facility in Karjan, Gujarat.

The proposed facility is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of the financial year 2027-28.

In an exclusive interview with Mercom India, Setul Shah, Director at Mecpower Solutions, said the facility will focus on BESS assembly, system integration, and engineering, and not on localizing the entire battery value chain.

He added that the goal is to integrate battery packs, racks, battery management systems, power conversion systems, and energy management systems into complete storage solutions for utility-scale and commercial and industrial applications.

Shah said that initially, battery cells are likely to be sourced externally because domestic cell manufacturing capacity has yet to scale enough to meet market demand.

The collaboration will tap into Mecpower Solutions’ renewable energy project development, engineering, and execution capabilities  and Navitas Solar’s integrated manufacturing expertise.

The partnership aims to develop battery storage solutions for utility-scale, commercial, and industrial renewable energy applications.

The facility’s output is expected to meet project requirements across both companies, including engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) deployments and utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Mecpower Solutions offers industrial solar EPC, battery storage, independent power producer solutions, solar parks, and renewable energy infrastructure. The company has projects across multiple Indian states.

Last year, Mecpower Solutions was one of the winners of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam’s auction to set up a 500 MW/2,000 MWh standalone battery energy storage system under the build-own-operate model in the state.

According to data from the Mercom India Renewable Energy Project Tracker, India’s energy storage pipeline crossed 110 GWh across the under-development and pre-construction stages. Battery storage deployment is being driven by renewable energy tenders, peak power procurement, firm and dispatchable renewable energy projects, distribution-level storage procurements, and standalone storage tenders.
